The Purple Purse

My mother-in-law gifted me with a purple leather purse. Not something I would have bought for myself, but I find that I like it. It’s small enough not to be a bother and roomy enough to hold my stuff plus a book. And while purple is not my favorite color, I kinda like broadening my palette.
I find gift-giving fraught with such uncertainties and inner judgements. Especially gifts around mandated gift-giving occasions. I like weddings because most people register for what they want, which makes it much easier for those of us who either have no idea what to get someone or who internally battle with themselves over every little choice. I envy people who can find and give gifts with aplomb. I stink at it.
So here comes the biggest holiday season of the year. Ugh. Over the past few years, I have only gotten gifts for blood and in-law family who expect such things, which fortunately is a small number of people. I never feel like I know people well enough to get them a really good present, which I define as something they would really want and like.
Really, I’m just angsting here. I don’t have a secret “feel-good” ending to this post. No lesson. I wish I did — I would gift it to you and me both. Now I feel like this is the lamest post ever, when all I wanted to do was share this picture of my cute new purse.
And yes, that is a pirate monkey riding a my little pony, drawn for me by my friend and colleague, Evan Keeling.
